Women’s Health Class

For the past year, every other Friday evening from 5:30-8pm, a group of Somali women from the Cedar Riverside neighborhood have met together in the dining room at 630 Cedar Avenue for exercise, health education, and a meal. Group members learn about health topics they themselves suggested. Additionally, all participants are asked about health care coverage and whether they have a primary care clinic. Nurses and other health professionals also monitor the women’s blood pressures at each class. During the past year, several exciting partnerships developed. First, doctors from Smiley’s clinic, Somali instructors from the Red Cross, and other health professionals volunteer to teach class sessions. Medical interpreters are provided when needed. Secondly, students from the Volunteers of America (VOA) Alternative School night diploma program can earn credit for their attendance at the Women’s Health class. Volunteers from Fairview University Medical Center, Health Partners Riverside, Trinity Lutheran Congregation, Hennepin County Child and Teen Checkups, Metropolitan Health Plan, Simply Good Eating Program from the University of Minnesota and Vista Volunteers make this program possible. This class is partially funded by a donation from Fairview University Medical Center Medical Staff. Youth Programs
